History

Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory has been serving families in our community since 1902. In 2010, we continued to evolve and built a pet cremation facility in Huron. Groff Pet Loss Services is honored to be a part of the rich history of this community and plan to be a part of it for many years to come.

The Groff Funeral Home has provided our community with the utmost in professional service since its founding over a century ago. In 1939, F. Leo Groff joined the Frey Funeral Home. Located at 604 W. Washington St. in downtown Sandusky, it was an established business in Sandusky since 1902. Leo purchased the business from Fred Frey in 1949. In 1973, Leo's son, Leon J. Groff, joined the firm and the name was changed to Frey-Groff Funeral Home. Father and son expanded the business in 1987 with the addition of our present Groff Funeral Homes location at 1607 E. Perkins Avenue in Sandusky.

Over the years, Leon, along with his wife Ann, expanded Groff Funeral Home into the surrounding communities of Milan and Huron, and began offering cremation at their own facility in 1992. Meadow Green Cemetery was designed and opened in 1989. In 2001, The Remembrance Center was opened as a gift gallery for families to select condolence gifts and keepsakes for all of life’s occasions.

In 2010, Leon's daughter, Kara Groff Mesenburg, joined the firm and continued to expand the offerings by opening Groff Pet Loss Services which provides our community with pet cremation services. We invested in our community by installing in Huron, Ohio the only pet crematory in the Sandusky, Huron and Milan, Ohio area. We know it is important to you who cares for your beloved pet, so we wanted to ensure your pet never leaves our care. Our pet cremation division is now managed by Leon's other daughter, Kelly Groff, who provides the utmost care and compassion to all furry family members. Pre-arrangement services, merchandise and keepsakes to commemorate your pet's honor, meeting face-to-face compassionate staff and crematory operators, and online obituary remembrances are a few of the services that make us unique and a step ahead of out-of-town pet cremation options offered by other funeral homes. Your peace of mind is our top priority when we are called upon to get your beloved pet back home to you quickly and with dignity.

In 2013, we expanded our Sandusky Chapel to include the Serenity Room and Cremation Center offering the most technologically advanced and comforting cremation facility in our community. Then in 2014 the Legacy Center was opened as a facility for families to host luncheons and life celebrations following funeral services. It is the goal of the Groff family to simplify a difficult process and reduce the stress of funeral planning on families by providing a trusted facility to make all of the necessary arrangements at one location. We are the only facility in Erie County that is able to conveniently provide full service funeral, cremation, cemetery, luncheon, pet, and remembrance options to you through one family-owned business.

The Groff Funeral Home and Crematory extends its gratitude for the trust and confidence that families have placed in us through the years. As we move toward the future, we are committed to upholding the traditions of excellence that are responsive to the needs of the families we serve.
